Art Drives Statehood

The quest for full equality for the people of DC is part of what it means to be a Washingtonian. The permanent second-class status is embedded in our psyche, our identity, and our community. Often that leads the creators of DC to a place of reflection – looking at what has been done to the people of DC – and less often a place of action. Or how we can truly become equal.

Education and artistic expression have long been the cornerstones of activism. They are the tools to build understanding of diverse cultures. This is where “Art Drives Statehood,” our event and partnership with non-profit Art Enables, comes in. Art Enables is a group that believes artists with disabilities are vital to a robust arts landscape and should be afforded the opportunity to pursue art as a career. Art Enables works with artists who experience a broad range of developmental and cognitive disabilities and mental health challenges, including autism, Down syndrome, traumatic brain injury, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder, among others.

“Art Drives Statehood” is a project of DC Vote seeking to more intentionally include messages about equality into the arts and culture of the District of Columbia. Through partnerships with organizations like Art Enables, Long Live GoGo, the Center for Artistic Activism, and Insomniac, we’ll also uplift the unique arts and culture of DC in activism spaces.

On August 29th at 6:30 pm, DC Vote will officially launch “Art Drives Statehood” with Art Enables at the Atlas Theater on H Street, NE. The event will be hosted by Eireann Dolan and her husband, Washington Nationals Pitcher Sean Doolittle, Pie Shop owner Sandra Basanti, and Chris “Cardi” Clayton of CHRiS CARDi House of Design.

Artists from Art Enables have been asked to interpret the iconic “Statehood” license plate that has been used for years as a symbol of the fight for equality. Their works will be on display and available for purchase with proceeds staying with the artists and Art Enables.
