DC By the Numbers

Population
DC has a population larger than Wyoming and larger than Vermont, both of which have two senators and a voting member of the House. DC also has more residents than every single state had at the moment of its own admission to the union. 

Federal taxes
DC residents pay more in federal taxes per capita than residents of any state, and more in total federal taxes than 20 states combined.

Military service
DC has sent more soldiers per person to fight in America’s wars than most states.

Economic output
DC’s gross domestic product is larger than that of 17 states.

Representation
DC has zero senators and one non-voting Delegate to the House. DC does have three electoral votes for President, granted by the 23rd Amendment in 1961, the same number as the least populous states, but that same amendment gives DC no vote in Congress.

Public support for statehood
86% of DC voters supported statehood in an official 2016 referendum.

Legal backing
39 legal scholars have attested to the constitutionality of the DC statehood bill. It has passed the full House of Representatives twice, in 2020 and 2021.
