This past week, President Barack Obama delivered a remarkable commencement address to the students at Howard University. He had a simple message for the graduates – that every shred of progress we hope to make in America depends on voting. He’s right. And we need to make sure that every single eligible citizen can perform their fundamental duty. Recently, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe took an important step toward justice by restoring the voting rights of 200,000 formerly incarcerated people, who had paid their debts to society.

House Republicans are working on legislation that would block the District of Columbia government from spending its local tax dollars without approval by Congress, a subcommittee chairman said Thursday. Rep. Mark Meadows, a North Carolina Republican who chairs the subcommittee on government operations, said lawmakers are seeking to clarify the requirement that the city submit its local budget to Congress, as it has during more than 40 years of self-rule.

The justification offered by Rep. Mark Meadows in your February 7 story for introducing a private-school voucher bill for the District of Columbia is unfounded. “We’re not talking about Indiana or Nebraska,” Meadows said. “We’re talking about D.C., which is not a state, which obviously is supported in some fashion by the federal taxpayer dollars.” Indeed, DC is supported by federal taxpayer dollars, but that support is not unique. Every state is supported by federal taxpayer dollars, including North Carolina.

Once again, education barely came up in the GOP debate Saturday night, save when New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie bragged about his battles with teachers unions and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz blasted President Obama for “abusing executive power using Race to the Top funds in the Department of Education to force [the Common Core standards] in the states.” (Race to the Top ended last year, but who’s counting?)

WASHINGTON - Currently in Washington D.C., school choice is available in two forms. Students of any economic background can choose to attend a public charter school or there is the DC Opportunity Scholarship program, a federally funded school choice program for low-income students to attend private schools. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has introduced the Educational Freedom Account Act, a new school choice program for families in the District. The program is different because it would be funded by local tax dollars and would be available to every public or charter school student.

Eleventh District U.S. Rep. Mark Meadows has filed a bill to allow parents to get most of Washington, D.C., schools' revenue in the form of vouchers to be spent at any school they want. But the district's representative in the House, Democratic U.S. Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton, says it "violates (Meadows') own tea party principles" favoring local control over local issues and promises to fight its passage.
