National Conference of State Legislatures Committee Supports DC Equality Resolution

The National Conference of State Legislatures' (NCSL) Committee on Law, Criminal Justice and Public Safety voted today to support a resolution backing full democratic equality and statehood for the District of Columbia. The committee vote means the resolution will come before elected officials of all states attending the NCSL Washington Forum. The resolution will be considered Friday during the NCSL Business Meeting.

DC Vote is using the resolution to educate state legislators and identify those elected officials that would be interested in introducing similar resolutions in their states.

"This resolution has already generated a lot of discussion at the NCSL Forum about the lack of democratic equality for DC," said DC Vote executive Director Kimberly Perry. “We are enthusiastic about the new partnerships being formed; and thank the DC Council for their collaboration in this great effort.”

Adoption of the resolution by the full body would put the non-partisan NCSL on record of supporting equality for DC and the importance of political rights for DC residents equal to all other Americans.
