Senator Rand Paul’s (R-KY) response to an audience question regarding DC budget autonomy at a Howard University speech today was misleading and perpetuated a myth about the District.
His contention that amendments he offered last year to the DC Local Budget Autonomy Act were not the cause of the bill’s failure is misleading. Rand’s personal agenda on guns and abortion doomed chances for the bill.
Senator Paul also seemed to suggest that the Congress should conduct vigorous oversight of all federal money that goes to the District because “DC’s gets money from the rest of the country, from tax receipts.” Senator Paul knows that all states get money from the federal government – and that the federal portion of DC’s budget is actually lower than several states.
DC Vote agrees with Senator Paul that he is of two minds. He says “maybe” DC should have budget autonomy, but at the same time he remains the author of the plan to kill the bill during the last Congress.
