DC Vote will be engaged in a wide range of events at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte as we highlight the lack of full democracy for residents of the District of Columbia.
Details about two major events are outlined below.
DATE: Tuesday, September 4
EVENT: DC Budget Freedom Rally. Tell Congress: Hands off of DC's Money
TIME: 1:00 PM
LOCATION: Corner of Alexander and East Trade Streets, Charlotte
DETAILS: Activists, delegates and elected officials who support DC democracy will rally for passage of The District of Columbia Budget Autonomy Act of 2012. Currently, Congress must approve the District government's budget before the city can spend locally-raised tax dollars. The legislation would allow DC to set its own fiscal year and spend funds on its own schedule.
Speakers confirmed to attend include DC Mayor Vincent Gray and Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC).
DATE: Wednesday, September 5
EVENT: DC Democracy and Statehood Forum
TIME: 1:00 PM
LOCATION: Hilton Garden Inn, Concord, 7831 Gateway Lane Northwest Concord, NC 28027 Ballroom C and B
DETAILS: DC Vote, DC DNC Delegates, the DC Statehood Coalition and other guest speakers will conduct a forum on efforts to achieve statehood for the District of Columbia.
