The House Committee on the Judiciary mark-up of H.R. 3803 demonstrates that Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) remains committed to imposing his own personal political views on the people of the District of Columbia. Franks’ bill would ban nearly all abortions in the District of Columbia after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
The committee will meet at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday July 10 in Room 2141 Rayburn Bldg. Several DC voting rights activists will attend the markup.
Rep. Franks’ bill is a direct infringement upon DC Home Rule. His bill applies only to the District of Columbia.
“Rep. Franks is the latest in the line of self-styled small government politicians who seem to have no problem imposing their personal political agenda upon the people of the District,” said Ilir Zherka, Executive Director of DC Vote.
Franks has tirelessly pursued his effort of imposing the abortion ban on the only Americans who do not have a vote in Congress. He rejected a request by DC Delegate Eleanor Homes Norton to testify at a recent hearing on H.R. 3803 – a courtesy traditionally granted when legislation has a direct impact upon a member’s district.
