WHEN: TUESDAY, APRIL 17, 2012, 8:30 AM - 1:30 PM
WHERE: United Methodist Building, 100 Maryland Avenue, NE, Various Congressional offices on Capitol Hill
DETAILS:
The DC Voting Rights Coalition will gather at the United Methodist Building at 8:30 AM for breakfast with Mayor Vincent Gray and Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton just prior to the Free DC's Budget Advocacy Day.
This advocacy efforts comes on the heels of a new national poll (below) that shows the public overwhelming rejects ongoing congressional efforts to meddle in local DC budget matters.
After the breakfast, local activists and pro bono attorneys
will begin meeting with dozens of Congressional offices to press for passage of House and Senate bills to grant DC greater budget autonomy. The citizen advocates will be building on substantial momentum for DC budget autonomy legislation in Congress. House Oversight & Government Reform Committee Chair Darrell Issa (R-CA) has drafted a budget autonomy bill. Recently, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) and the governors of both Virginia and Maryland expressed support for giving DC more authority to manage it own local tax dollars.
The breakfast is a public event and media are welcome to cover the office visits. The individual meetings in Members' offices will be closed. DC Vote Executive Director Ilir Zherka will be available to comment during the day and at the conclusion of the meetings.
NOTE: Ilir Zherka will also be available on Monday, April 16th to preview the event.
