December 11, 2011

WHO: Hunger Strikers for DC Democracy on day five of fast.

WHAT: Office file in and request to meet with House Appropriations Committee Chair Harold (Hal) Rogers (R-KY) to express opposition to legislative riders on the DC spending bill.

WHEN: Monday, December 12, 11:30 a.m.

WHERE: Hunger strikers and supporters will gather just beyond security at the South Capitol Street Entrance to the Rayburn House Office Building at 11:30 and then depart for Rep. Rogers office at 2406 Rayburn.

DETAILS: Three individuals associated with Occupy DC -- Sam Jewler, Adrian Parsons, and Kelly Mears -- began a hunger strike for DC Democracy on December 8. Each of the strikers have taken only water and vitamins since they began their fast. On Monday, December 12, the strikers who are physically able to will go to Capitol Hill to meet with Rep. Rogers, urging him to keep legislative riders off of the DC spending bill. The strikers have indicated that they intend to remain in Rep. Rogers office until they receive a meeting. Media reports indicate that there will be an effort to add language to the FY2012 DC Appropriations bill that would ban the use of local funds for syringe exchange programs and abortion services for indigent women.

The Hunger Strikers for DC Democracy maintain that they will continue to refuse food until the Congress takes significant steps to give DC citizens the same democratic rights as other Americans, including the right to have a voting representative in Congress. The strikers' statement can be viewed at occupythevotedc.tumblr.com.

NOTE: To arrange interviews with the hunger strikers, please call Adrian Parsons at 404-913-3749 or Sam Jewler at 202-210-9362. For other information about the strike call Corryn Freeman at 443-538-6615.
