DETAILS: Three individuals associated with Occupy DC -- Sam Jewler, Adrian Parsons, and Kelly Mears -- began a hunger strike for DC Democracy on December 8. Each of the strikers have taken only water and vitamins since they began their fast. On Monday, December 12, the strikers who are physically able to will go to
Capitol Hill to meet with Rep. Rogers, urging him to keep legislative riders off of the DC spending bill. The strikers have indicated that they intend to remain in Rep. Rogers office until they receive a meeting.
Media reports indicate that there will be an effort to add language to the FY2012 DC Appropriations bill that would ban the use of local funds for syringe exchange programs and abortion services for indigent women.
The Hunger Strikers for DC Democracy maintain that they will continue to refuse food until the Congress takes significant steps to give DC citizens the same democratic rights as other Americans, including the right to have a voting representative in Congress.
