Washington, DC—The advocacy group DC Vote will lead residents of Washington, DC and a coalition of local and national organizations in a rally at the White House this Saturday, June 25.
Organizers are reacting to a bill passed by the House of Representatives’ Appropriations Committee today that would prohibit District of Columbia
officials from using local tax revenue to operate a Medicaid program that covers abortion, providing low-income women equal access to the service
and they plan to send a message to President Obama that he must stand up for DC against these attacks on local democracy.
Representative Barbara Lee (D, CA) offered an amendment that would have allowed DC to use local funds for Medicaid abortion but it was defeated in a party line vote.
In light of the Appropriations Committee’s actions, some activists have expressed interest in engaging in acts of civil disobedience. Such actions would take place after the rally program concludes at 1:00 PM.
DC’s non-voting delegate to Congress Eleanor Holmes Norton will speak at the rally, as will representatives from a wide range of interest groups that have joined DC Vote in advocating for DC Home Rule and voting rights. Though DC residents support the federal government by paying federal income tax, they have no voting representative in Congress and have no local officials that can legislate without congressional approval.
