Councilmember Yvette M. Alexander Speaks Out Against
GOP's Proposal to Overturn D.C. Council Votes
(Washington, D.C.) – Recently, House GOP leaders have expressed interest in overturning the D.C. Council’s vote on the Marriage Equality Bill and have also proposed reinstating the school vouchers in Washington, D.C. Councilmember Yvette M. Alexander does not believe that Congress should be able to overturn decisions already made by the D.C. Council.
“It’s an insult that Congress constantly attempts to dictate their authority over the will of the people of the District of Columbia,” said Councilmember Alexander.
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), chair of the conservative Republican Study Committee (RSC), has planned to make it a priority to ban same-sex marriage even though a month before he stated that fiscal issues would be the focus of the GOP. House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) joined together Wednesday to announce a plan to introduce new legislation that will bring back the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship program.
“This is a call to action to all D.C. residents,” said Councilmember Alexander. “Now more than ever we must remain passionate in our quest for statehood.”
