DC Vote supports DC's Delegate to Congress, Eleanor Holmes Norton, in introducing bills yesterday that will provide full democracy for the District of Columbia. We stand with Delegate Norton in continuing to fight for DC despite the adversity we now face in the House of Representatives, made plain in its first vote to deny DC even the small voting privilege it had previously enjoyed.

The bills introduced come directly from Del. Norton's coversations with the tax-paying residents of Washington, DC, who strongly favor autonomy rather than retrocession to Maryland. We echo Del. Norton's assertion that this solution is also unpopular in Maryland, and "it is inconsistent with the District's pursuit of self-determination to impose upon another jurisdiction without consent from that jurisdiction." DC Vote's members, staff, supporters and coalition partners will continue to fight until DC residents are afforded their full rights as American citizens.
