Washington, DC - Today, the DC City Council will consider a bill to legalize same-sex marriage in the District of Columbia. Ilir Zherka, DC Vote Executive Director, responds. The following statement below may be quoted in full or in part:
"Today, the locally elected members of the DC City Council are poised to legalize same-sex marriage. Like every other locality in the nation, these elected officials are responding to the needs and interests of the people they serve.
DC Vote, as an organization dedicated to full voting representation and full democracy, is prepared to defend the District's right to enact laws on behalf of the more than half a million Washingtonians. We will be monitoring this issue closely and will react quickly and with all of our resources if Congress decides to interfere. Together with our coalition partners, we will continue to defend DC's local democracy."
