Washington, DC - DC Vote is vigorously preparing for the possibility that the pro-gun lobby will attach a gun amendment to the DC Appropriations bill.
The House Appropriations Committee will hold a Full Committee Markup of the DC Appropriations bill tomorrow, July 7, at 7:00 PM.
"There is a real possibility that the NRA will attempt to add a gun amendment to DC appropriations," said Ilir Zherka, DC Vote Executive Director. "We're doing everything in our power to thwart these attacks on the District."
Zherka said the group, along with their coalition, is sending letters to the Hill, visiting congressional offices and reaching out to voting rights supporters to attend the hearing.
"We will take the necessary action steps whenever DC's democracy is under attack," Zherka added. "It is unacceptable that certain members of Congress continue to use DC as a testing ground for bad legislation that they would never even consider in their home districts."
On February 26, Senator John Ensign (R-NV) attached an amendment to the DC Voting Rights Act (S.160/H.R.157) that repealed DC's gun control laws. DC Vote and its coalition have been working to defeat a similar amendment to the House version of the bill.
"Our supporters and coalition will continue to rally around this fight," said Zherka. "We are joined in solidarity against these attempts to deny DC its democracy."
