City Moves Closer to Deal on Naming Rights for RFK

WASHINGTON - Could RFK Stadium become Taxation Without Representation Field?

That's one of several proposals the city is considering.

Grass roots organizer Mike Panetta offered $51.08 to buy the naming rights for the field.

"It was sort of tongue and cheek. We wanted to get officially on the books," he says.

"Why not have grassroots effort to rename the stadium to have awareness about the lack of voting representation?"

Seriously, his group's Web site has raised another $18,000 in pledges.

Of course, he expects the naming rights to go for about $1 million.

D.C. Sports and Entertainment Commission Chairman Mark Tuohey says city officials this week are meeting with three groups interested in having the naming rights.

"It's our hope that by the end of this week, we'll be prepared to make a decision, and that we will at least have a decision by opening day," Tuohey says. "Signage and stuff may have to wait a few games."

Revenue from the naming rights will go entirely to the District.
