D.C. United Coach is the New Face of Budget Autonomy

At last, the esoteric fight for District budget autonomy gets some star power! Some professional soccer star power, anyway.

D.C. United head coach Ben Olsen is the face of a new ad campaign produced by D.C. Vote. He’ll be featured on buses and bus shelters while wearing a gag and urging folks to “Tell Congress: Free DC’s Budget.”

Olsen, a Pennsylvania native who now lives near U Street NW, offered these thoughts in a D.C. Vote news release: “I, along with my family, friends, and every other District resident, should have a voice when it comes to matters that affect each of us on a daily basis.”

Says outgoing D.C. Vote Executive Director Ilir Zherka: “His involvement means our efforts to educate the public about the fight for DC budget freedom will be more successful.”

Olsen is also set to appear at the group’s annual gala next week at the Mayflower Hotel.

As you are no doubt aware, D.C. Vote is strongly backing a push to pursue congressional budget autonomy through a ballot referendum. The D.C. Council will likely vote before the end of the year on whether to put the question to voters.
