House to Vote on Banning Late-term Abortions in D.C.

Author:      Liz Farmer

The U.S. House of Representatives will vote Tuesday on legislation that would ban late-term abortions in the District. The legislation, called the District of Columbia Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 3803), is backed by the National Right to Life Committee and sponsored by Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz.

The bill was approved by the House Judiciary Committee last week, and is being fast-tracked to the House floor. The bill says that by 20 weeks after fertilization, the fetus has the capacity to experience great pain and prohibits abortion after that point, except when an acute physical condition endangers the life of the mother. Seven states have already enacted similar legislation; according to Right to Life.

If passed, the legislation would then go to the Senate.

Abortions in the District are currently legal through all nine months of pregnancy.
