House Panel Approves District Funding, Continues Abortion Spending Ban

A House panel approved new federal funding for the District on Wednesday, including additional money for city courts, the extension of a D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, and the continuation of a controversial ban on city money being used to pay for abortions.

The House Appropriations Committee approved the fiscal year 2013 Financial Services spending plan, which includes funding for a variety of government services, on a voice vote.

But before the final vote, House Democrats and Republicans squared off over a provision in the budget that prohibits the District from using its own money to pay for abortions for low-income women. . . .
