WASHINGTON - D.C. leaders once again are trying to protect home-rule. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and Mayor Vincent Gray held a press conference on Capitol Hill Tuesday morning to urge Congress not to interfere with its local spending.
The leaders believe D.C. should have full budget autonomy, and they are resisting efforts by some congressional members to include special spending rules within the D.C. budget.
Last week, more than three dozen D.C. residents assembled outside the Congressional office of Rep. Trent Franks (R-Arizona) on Wednesday. They came with an ironic laundry list of complaints about the city for the Congressman to consider.
Franks is pushing legislation that would ban almost all late-term abortions within the District of Columbia.
"The gruesome, late-term abortions of unborn children (who can feel pain) is, in my opinion, the greatest human rights atrocity in the United States, today," Franks said at a hearing last week.
