Remembered that time Rep. Trent Franks wanted to legislate on the ability of D.C. women to get abortions after 20 weeks into their pregnancy? Some D.C. activists have decided that an adequate punishment for this would be to declare the Arizona Republican “pretend mayor.”
On Wednesday, protestors gathered outside of Franks’ Capitol Hill office to show him just how little they wanted him involved in D.C.’s local politics, the Washington Post reported. The protest, organized by DC Vote, consisted of participants “asking” Franks to fix problems in D.C., like WMATA inefficiencies, the mess in Anacostia River, broken streetlights, etc., according to the article.
With the House in recess this week, Franks was likely traveling, and the door to his office never opened. Protestors had a sarcastic response to that point too. ”We expect him to be here whether it’s recess or not, because there are a lot of issues to deal with here in the District,” DC Vote’s Ilir Zherka told the Post. “If he’s going to be D.C.’s pretend mayor, he needs to be here full-time.”
My favorite part of the story, which the Post article saved till the end, is the incredibly graphic statement from the National Right to Life Committee (which supports Franks in his pro-life policies). “We hope that after more reflection, the demonstrators will grasp the profound difference between a broken street light,” NRLC Legislative Director Douglas Johnson told the Post, “and the broken skull of an unborn child, which is crushed by a steel clamp during a late abortion.”
