D.C. Looking to New Hampshire for Statehood Support

Leaders in the District are looking to seize on the hype of the presidential primaries in New Hampshire by making a trip to the state to make a case for D.C. statehood.

New Hampshire lawmakers introduced a resolution last year in support of D.C. becoming the 51st state, which leaders will testify in support of during their trip. It’s part of a new outreach campaign by councilmembers in hopes of getting other states to pass similar resolutions.

Chairman Kwame Brown and councilmembers Michael A. Brown and David Catania will detail their upcoming trip at a news conference Wednesday.

Congress approved an amendment in 1978 that would have given the district full representation in the House and Senate, but it fell far short of ratification. District activists have focused in recent years on getting a voting member of the House.
