Two Major Marches Cancelled in DC

Black America Web is reporting that two major marches have been cancelled in D.C. due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Irene.

D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray’s office has announced that a rally and march scheduled for Saturday has been called off because of Hurricane Irene.

Gray's office and the group D.C. Vote had hoped the Full Democracy and Freedom rally would help highlight the lack of full voting rights and congressional representation for the city.

Following the rally, the group had planned to join the March for Jobs and Equality, led by the Rev. Al Sharpton of the National Action Network and radio personality Tom Joyner. Sharpton announced early Friday that the NAN march had also been cancelled.

Thursday evening, Harry Johnson, CEO of the Martin Luther King Memorial Foundation, announced that the formal dedication of the King memorial would be postponed until September or October because of the hurricane, which is expected to bring severe storms to the D.C. area and threatened travel along the eastern seaboard.

Beach areas from the Carolinas to New York are being evacuated and Amtrak has canceled train service heading south from Washington. Air traffic has been disrupted as well with delays and cancellations.
