DC Day at MLK Memorial; Mayor, Others to Greet Visitors

WASHINGTON (AP) - The second day for the public to visit the new Martin Luther King Jr. memorial will be a celebration of the nation's capital.

District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray and other district leaders will be greeting residents and tourists Tuesday at what they've dubbed "D.C. Day" at the memorial.

Gray initially floated plans to hand out tickets to the event to district residents. But the National Park Service said they would not restrict access to the memorial, so the event is open to anyone.

The mayor, who was arrested earlier this year while protesting the district's lack of representation in Congress, is using the occasion to advocate for statehood. He says King's dream is unfulfilled for district residents.

Gray plans to spend much of the day at the memorial.
