D.C. residents can catch the first glimpse of the new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, five days before the public dedication ceremony, Mayor Vince Gray announced Wednesday.
Gray joined Harry Johnson, president of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, to name Aug. 23 "D.C. Residents Day" at the newest monument of the National Mall.
"We have major large scale events that come to the city and the District residents sacrifice daily routines to be a part of this," said Gray spokeswoman Linda Wharton-Boyd.
Between 20,000 and 25,000 passes will be available online or at the MLK branch of the D.C. library system starting Aug. 18, according to Wharton-Boyd. (Identification proving residency will be required.) The city will lift the memorial's cover from 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on the 23rd.
