New Hampshire to Weigh DC Statehood Resolution

Source:      Associated Press News Service (AP)
Date:      Tuesday, June 7, 2011

WASHINGTON (AP) - They don't have much say in the matter, but at least some New Hampshire lawmakers would like to see the District of Columbia become the nation's 51st state.

A New Hampshire state representative has introduced a resolution expressing support for D.C. statehood.

It's not the first time New Hampshire has stood with D.C. voting rights advocates. In 2008, the same lawmaker, Democratic State Representative Cindy Rosenwald, introduced a resolution supporting D.C.'s bid to give a vote on the House floor to its representative in Congress.

In a statement, Rosenwald calls it "fundamentally unfair" that the district's 600,000 residents "are subject to taxation without representation."

D.C. Council member David Catania says it's important that people in other states get involved in the fight for D.C. voting rights.
