Why I Decided to Get Arrested
How I emerged from the sidelines to become a political prisoner for DC voting

While sitting on the asphalt on Monday, April 11th at 5:50 p.m., I thought to reach in my pocket to send a quick text to my lawyer friend, Ubi Akpan. “About to be arrested in front of the hart (sic) building. May have to call you.” Then scribbled the number on my hand before the phone battery died, knowing I would only get one call. This was the last text I sent while I was locked arm-in-arm with another protester as we sat in the middle of Constitution Ave. We were protesting the lack of autonomy that DC residents have over our ability to raise taxes and spend them the way we decide. One protester was being lifted by several police officers. Two US Capitol police officers bent over me and one asked me to stand up and told me I was being arrested for obstructing traffic. I stood up. For the first time in my life, I was handcuffed.
