May 11, 2011 - Advocates for D.C. voting rights are planning another rally later today at the U.S. Capitol, protesting a federal budget agreement that affects the District. Protestors will meet at 5:30 p.m. at Upper Senate Park.
The activists are upset over the budget compromise between Congress and the White House that limits the District's freedom to spend its own money on certain initiatives.
The group DC Vote has called the deal an unwelcome intrusion into the city's affairs, staging a series of protests. Mayor Vincent Gray and members of the D.C. Council among others have been arrested for civil disobedience at some of the rallies.
Congress must approve the district's budget, and the mayor and D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown have been asked to testify tomorrow at a House subcommittee hearing looking at the long-term sustainability of the city's finances.
