Cheh Arrested in D.C. Rights Protest

Ward 3 Councilwoman Mary Cheh and seven other women were arrested Wednesday evening while protesting for D.C. rights on Capitol Hill. Cheh was part of a D.C. Vote-organized rally focused specifically on a bill passed by the House Wednesday that would make permanent a federally-imposed ban on using D.C. taxpayer dollars to fund abortions. Cheh is the latest of several D.C. elected officials to get arrested in protest against federal oversight of the District. Mayor Vince Gray led the charge last month during a similar Capitol Hill protest. “I am proud to join the people today and my colleagues on the Council who were arrested last month in standing up for home rule and against congressional meddling in the District budget,” Cheh said in a statement. “We must do everything we can at this critical juncture to oppose H.R. 3,” she said, referring to the bill.

The bill, which passed the house 251-175, also prevents deducting an abortion's cost from taxable income, except when it's performed in cases of rape, incest or when a woman's life would be in danger if she went through with the pregnancy.

In addition the bill disallows a tax credit for small employer health insurance plans providing coverage for abortions — closing what abortion opponents say is a gap in President Barack Obama's health care overhaul. Firms are currently allowed the credit for plans covering abortions if they collect a separate premium from policyholders and that money is kept apart from federal subsidies.

The legislation is unlikely to make it past the Democrat-led Senate.
