Washington, D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray was arrested protesting the federal budget cuts restricting local and federal funds for abortion services in D.C.
Gray, arrested Monday on Capitol Hill, says the $38 billion budget cuts for the 2011 fiscal year, which almost resulted in a government shutdown, violate the rights of Washington, D.C. residents.
“Why should women in the District of Columbia be subjected to a set of rules that no other woman is subjected to?” Gray said during the protest, according to Reuters.
Among the few hundred protesters, the mayor was one of 41 arrested. Authorities detained city council members, including chairman Kwame R. Brown, Sekou Biddle, and Michael A. Brown, charged with blocking a street near a Senate office building.
