WASHINGTON - Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D -DC) said on Friday that if the government does shutdown she will donate her salary for each day to non-profit organizations that are working to for D.C. voting rights and statehood.
Norton has also declared her entire staff essential, which means they will be on the job during a shutdown, but will not be guaranteed pay.
About 14,000 District of Columbia employees would be furloughed in the event of a federal government shutdown.
Police and fire departments and schools would remain open but the shutdown would be a crippling blow to city services.
Congress must approve the district's budget, more than half of which comes from local tax revenue.
Norton spoke on FOX 5 Morning News Thursday saying the situation is inherently unfair and that Congress should not treat local government as a federal agency.
D.C. officials also say the district could lose millions of dollars a week in tax revenue and tourist dollars.
