Don't Tread on D.C.

In 2009, President Obama and a Congress under pro-choice control lifted the discriminatory rule that prohibited Washington, D.C. from spending its own local funds on abortion care, giving the District the same right that all states have.

Now, this progress is at risk--and we're joining forces with our friends at DC Vote in standing up for the women in a community where many NARAL Pro-Choice America employees live.

Here's the background: Congress has the authority to overrule the decisions of the District of Columbia's locally elected city council.

And the people of D.C. don't even have a say in what goes on in Congress: they have no senators, and their lone voice in the U.S. House of Representatives, Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, doesn't get a vote. Talk about taxation without representation!

With the House under anti-choice control, these limitations on their rights have severe consequences for D.C. women's freedom and privacy.

The House has passed a budget bill that would prohibit D.C. from spending its own locally raised funds to help low-income women access abortion care.

That's right: Congress is telling D.C. taxpayers what they can and can't spend their money on!

We must make sure our friends in the Senate do not allow the House's attack on women in D.C. to stand.

That's why we're supporting our friends at DC Vote in their Senate Advocacy Day on March 29.

They're meeting at 8:30 a.m. on Capitol Hill to send the Senate a message: don't tread on D.C.! Sign up to join them. If you can't make it, please call your senators.

Stand with DC Vote and Del. Holmes Norton, and tell the Senate to stop treading on D.C.!
