McGinty's Mailbag: Libya Intervention And DC

John from Chantilly watched the President's speech Monday night, but remains unconvinced that U.S. intervention in Libya makes any sense.

He wrote: "Somebody please stop this insanity. This is way beyond mission creep. This is a new policy that hasn't been debated nor approved by the legislative branch which seriously depletes already depleted military forces. And the 'success' of those 'missions' creates power vacuums that Muslin extremist groups rush to fill. Let's bring our troops home and use our resources to feed and care for our own citizens."

Fair enough, John, but I saw the speech as the President's cost benefit analysis. In other wordsm he argues it's worth it to help save Libyan civilians if the cost, that is the expenditure American blood and treasure, can be contained.

Unfortunately, as you point out, that's a pretty big "if."

And then, there was this reaction to those of you who wrote in Monday blasting D.C. Councilman Michael Brown for his plan to ceremonially rename historic city streets like Pennsylvania Avenue to protest the city's lack of voting rights.

Christopher wrote in to say he likes the idea: "The DC government should, without question, rename a street either in front of the White House or the House and Senate office buildings with a slogan expressing the need for DC voting rights and home rule."

And finally, there was this on Mayor Vince Gray's ongoing difficulties. Jerry is quoting the Who: "There's nothing in the streets Looks any different to me. Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss."
