WASHINGTON - Advocates for D.C. voting rights in Congress have visited the offices of all 100 senators to call attention to a budget bill that would end funding for local programs.
The House has passed a spending bill that would bar the district from spending local taxpayer dollars on needle exchange programs and abortions for low-income women.
D.C. Vote Executive Director Ilir Zherka says many senators weren't aware of the so-called riders on the House spending resolution. He says Tuesday's visits accomplished their goal of educating the Senate about the issues.
D.C. Vote does not take a position on the programs but says they should be decided at the local level. Supporters say the needle exchange program has been a key element of reducing the district's HIV/AIDS rate.
