Advocates for D.C. voting rights will press the Senate Tuesday to oppose the House spending bill.
The DC Voting Rights Coalition opposes language in the House GOP bill that would prohibit the District of Columbia from using local tax dollars on public programs for AIDS prevention and access to reproductive healthcare. The language is included in legislation that would cut spending this year by $61 billion.
Members of the group will meet with staff from a dozen Senate offices, including Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), and Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine). The group will first meet with Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.).
The meetings are aimed at discouraging senators from “bargaining away District autonomy,” according to a release from the group. The release expressed concern that Senate Democrats will “sell-out D.C. to reach a budget deal with House Republicans.”
The event will take place 50 years to the day that District residents were granted a vote in presidential elections.
