DC Leaders Still Preparing for Shutdown

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Congress has agreed to continue funding the federal government through March 18, and that means Washington's local government will stay open at least through that date.

But D.C. leaders are warning that local government is still threatened by a potential shutdown.

Mayor Vincent Gray said Wednesday that city officials are working to determine what functions of D.C. government would legally be allowed to continue in the event of a shutdown. D.C. government can't spend money without a congressional appropriation, and that includes local tax revenue.

Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill, Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton is trying to ensure that D.C. will keep running during a shutdown. But a House committee has rejected two amendments that would allow Washington to spend its local funds through the end of the fiscal year.
