Abortion Language Reignites DC-Congress Tensions

Eleven protesters with a D.C. voting rights group disrupted a hearing to oppose a measure that would prevent D.C. tax funds from subsidizing abortions.

The protesters with D.C. Vote stood up at the beginning of a Judiciary subcommittee hearing wearing red gags. Capitol Police quickly escorted them out. No one was charged with a crime.

When it comes to health care, Washington, unlike the 50 states, could not for years use its own funds to help low-income women pay for abortions. That changed in 2009, when President Barack Obama signed a measure that allowed the District to use its funds as other states do. A provision in the measure that Republicans are now considering would reinstate the pre-2009 ban. The measure as a whole would change tax law so that individuals who purchase health care insurance that includes abortion coverage would not be able to receive tax credits or deductions.

"We stood in silent protest today to dramatize an effort by some in Congress to silence Washingtonians," spokeswoman Leah Ramsey said in a statement.
