The District’s next mayor is ready to hit the ground running after his official victory .

“This was not an easy journey getting here tonight,” Vince Gray told the crowd gathered at Love nightclub late Tuesday night. “And the road ahead is even more difficult. The challenges we face as city seem daunting,” he said before running through a laundry list that included a continuing education reform, handling the city’s tough financial situation and securing D.C. statehood.

At a noon press conference on Wednesday Gray will announce his transition team, which will be headed by Amtrak executive and Gray confidant Lorraine Green, The Washington Examiner has confirmed.

Meanwhile, the District will now also elect its attorney general after a referendum on the issue picked up 76 percent of voters’ support.

Turnout in this non-presidential year general election was on par with the 2006 vote. Almost 126,000 cast votes (nearly 28 percent of registered voters) compared to about 122,000 in 2006.
