A call to action sounded in the Mayflower Hotel ballroom last night when DC Vote held the 10th Annual Champions of Democracy Awards Dinner. Executive Director, Ilir Zherka, began the evening by informing a supportive audience of the launch of a Demand Democracy Campaign and calling for more assertive action to demand full and equal democracy for DC. Kathleen Matthews capably stood in as master of ceremonies until her husband Chris Matthews, host of Hardball on MSNBC, arrived straight from assignment, to take over.
Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md.) presented an award to Smith Bagley, posthumously. It was lovingly accepted on his behalf by his wife Ambassador Elizabeth Frawley Bagley. Local restaurant owner Andy Shallal and voting rights activist Kathy Schmidt also received awards and recognition for their work in support of democracy for DC residents.
Local officials and long time supporters of the DC Vote mission applauded the work of all and departed with a renewed zeal to succeed.
