WASHINGTON - D.C. Council Chair and Democratic nominee for Mayor Vincent Gray met with one his many constituents Thursday. However, this supporter was far from your ordinary taxpayer.
United States Attorney General Eric Holder stopped by Gray's office to congratulate him on last week's primary victory.
"I wanted to come and congratulate our presumptive mayor," Holder told reporters after he hugged Gray in the lobby of the John A. Wilson Building.
Holder, a longtime D.C. resident and former judge, says he was there to, "talk about how the Obama administration is committed to making sure we do all that we can with regard to public safety and continue what I think is a good relationship between the administration and the city government."
Holder told a group of reporters that he voted for Gray in the primary and his visit came as "Attorney General and as a concerned citizen."
Holder has endorsed mayoral candidates in the past. He campaigned for former D.C. Mayor Tony Williams during his re-election campaign in 2002. Holder did not endorse a candidate in this year's primary.
Holder's candor came as a surprise to many veteran city hall reporters who didn't expect him to reveal who he voted for.
Prior to the meeting with Gray, Holder was asked what the Obama administration's position is on the District's lack of voting rights.
"I'm not going to get in to that today," Holder answered, but says it was among the topics he would discuss with Gray.
Holder was also asked if he has discussed District-specific issues with President Obama.
"I never discuss what I discuss with the president," Holder said.
