DC Vote To Engage Tea Party

Source:      C-SPAN
Date:      Monday, August 30, 2010

Washington, DC –

Who: Leaders of DC Vote, a group that advocates for voting representation and full democracy in Washington, DC

What: Will attend Glen Beck’s rally at the Lincoln Memorial to engage members of the ‘Tea Party’ and explain the reality of taxation without representation in the District of Columbia.

Participants will be dressed in colonial-era costume and will distribute bags of tea that read “End Taxation Without Representation in DC.”

When: Saturday, August 28 10:00 AM

Where: National World War II Memorial information center, located on Home Front Drive directly south of the Memorial on the National Mall

Quote:

“On the anniversary of Dr. King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech, DC Vote wants these visitors to Washington to understand that the dream has yet to be achieved in DC. The 600,000 residents of Washington, DC are treated like second-class citizens, paying the highest per-capita taxes in the nation while still subjected to the taxation without representation that inspired our Founding Fathers. We have been engaging in an on-going ‘tea party’ here since the District was established. Tea Party members advocate ‘founding principles’ and strong local government, so we hope they will support the District of Columbia’s struggle for full democracy and local autonomy.” —Ilir Zherka, Executive Director of DC Vote
