The group DC Vote plans to send President Barack Obama (web | news | bio) over 200 pounds worth of petitions asking for a vote for district residents in Congress.
The group says it plans to send more than 41,000 petitions on Wednesday at the Union Station Post office. They're also asking the president to include a statement about a vote for the city in his upcoming State of the Union address.
Washington's representative in Congress, Eleanor Holmes Norton (web | news | bio) , is expected to join the group. Though Norton represents some 600,000 people she is not allowed to vote on the House floor. A bill she has filed would change that, though it currently appears stalled. Congress would grant her the vote, but the president would have to sign the bill. Obama has said in the past he supports the measure.
