Lesson Plan - Suggested Classwork & Group Activities

  1. Voting Simulation - Reproduce the voting simulation warm up and hold class discussion afterwards.

  2. Skit - Organize the class into groups of 3-5 students and ask them to create a skit describing the situation of DC's denial of voting rights or describing an event on the timeline.

  3. Short Story - Organize the class into groups of 3-5 students to collaborate in writing a creative short story describing how DC's denial of voting rights affects people living in the District or describing an event on the timeline.

  4. Artwork - Students may individually create posters or illustrations describing DC's denial of voting rights and calling for change. Groups 3-5 may also collaborate in creating larger posters or collages that call for change.

  5. Poetry - Students may individually write a poem to be performed (optionally in slam poetry style) that describes DC's denial of voting rights and that calls for change.

  6. Freestyle Rap - Students may individually or in groups freestyle a rap that describes DC's denial of voting rights and that call for change.

  7. Debate - Divide the class into two groups and have them debate DC's right to representation, statehood, or retrocession. Students may also debate a local issue Congress has become involved with, like gun control or school vouchers.

  8. Letter - Students may individually compose a letter to a friend, family member, or pen-pal (preferably from outside of the District) to explain DC's denial of voting rights and state their opinion about the issue.

  9. Article - Students may individually compose short articles about different aspects of DC's denial of voting rights (historical, contemporary, local issues Congress becomes involved in, DC soldiers fighting for Iraqi voting rights, etc). Compile all of the class's articles together to create a DC voting rights newspaper.

  10. Blog or Podcast - Students may individually or in a group create an educational writing piece to post to blogs or produce and film a podcast to post on YouTube.
