E-bulletin - Issue VI - July 31, 2006

Dear DC Vote Supporters:

With many of its residents on vacation and Congress on recess, August tends to be a slow month in the nation's capital. But, DC Vote kept up the pace by planning for a hearing on the DC Voting Rights Act (H.R. 5388), getting ready for Congress Day 2006, and launching our new DC Voting Rights Lesson Plan for Teachers.

Two BIG Opportunities to Make Change Happen:
DC Voting Rights Act Subcommittee Hearing and Congress Day 2006

You don't need to be a lobbyist to pressure the Congress. Regular citizens persuade members of Congress on a variety of issues; it simply takes passionate individuals who are organized for action. That's why DC Vote is organizing two critical events.

A hearing for the DC Voting Rights Act is scheduled for Thursday, September 14 at 2:00 PM. We need your help packing the room as we show lawmakers that DC's denial of voting representation is an injustice that must be corrected. Please RSVP to Lateefah Mims at lmims@dcvote.org or 202.462.6000 x16. More information>>

On Thursday, September 21, we will personally follow up with legislators on DC Vote Congress Day 2006, where we will schedule meetings on the Hill to raise awareness about the DC Voting Rights Act. We want as many volunteers as possible to help make our voices heard. Please RSVP to congressday@dcvote.org. More information>>

DC Voting Rights Lesson Plan Launches in Time for Back-to-School

Born out of a need to preserve educational lessons about DC voting rights in our local schools, the DC Vote Lesson Plan for Teachers is complete. District of Columbia teachers, former DC public school students, DC Vote staff, and Board member Sarah Pokempner collaborated on this innovative approach to provide dynamic educational resources on DC's denial of democracy.

On the Lesson Plan for Teachers Web site, educators will find engaging warm-up activities, ready-to-print worksheets, visual aids, suggested assignments, and short videos that help explain taxation without representation in America's capital.

The resources were created to be easily modified for a variety of skill levels, and the lessons correspond with many of the District of Columbia Public School Standards.

Please pass along the link to the DC Vote Lesson Plan for Teachers, http://www.dcvote.org/library/lessonplan/index.cfm, to any history, social studies or civics teachers you know in Washington, DC, or around the country.

Volunteer Spotlight: Andy Colburn

Andy Colburn recently spent four years overseas working on the development of democracy in Uzbekistan, the Ukraine and other countries in the former Soviet Union. Once he moved back to Washington, DC, he decided building democracy in his own American neighborhood was an obvious cause to support.

Andy, a Colorado native, has become a regular face around the DC Vote office, as he lends his time and friendly personality to DC Vote projects and fundraising. He has made countless phone calls asking for donations for the Silent Auction for this year's Champions of Democracy Awards Reception, and DC Vote is appreciative of his hard work and passion for voting rights.

Watch DC Vote's Award-Winning Image Makers PSA Online

You may have heard us talking about our selection into the prestigious Women in Film & Video Image Makers program, where a talented group of regional high school students are shepherded by industry professionals as they create a Public Service Announcement for a DC-area nonprofit.

The final version of the 30-second PSA can now be viewed online. The students used a striking image of DC ballots for Congress being shredded in the PSA, and the finished product is a powerful piece that DC Vote can use to educate students and youth around the country about DC's plight.
