Get Active with Students for DC Vote

DC Vote has complied a list of sample activities that help get the word out on DC voting rights on campus. Choose actions

Ten Minutes

• Touch Base: Contact your campus coordinator or become one by contacting Students for DC Vote at students@dcvote.org.
• Talk: Tell a friend, classmate or relative about DC's denial of democracy.
• Go Online: Visit the Act NOW! section of DC Vote's award winning Web site.
• Facebook: Join the Students for DC Vote group on Facebook. Feature DC Voting Rights on your Facebook profile by adding the Cause Application and then joining the DC Voting Rights cause. For invitations and updates, you can friend our Communications Director, Kevin Kiger.
• MySpace: Check out the Students for DC Vote profile on MySpace. Don't forget to make us your friend and join the Students for DC Vote group, and to have your own friends do the same.
• Model: Wear your "Taxation Without Representation" t-shirt and display your bumper stickers.

One Hour

• Letter-to-the-Editor: Write a letter to your school or local newspaper.
• Media: Contact your student newspaper and radio station about addressing DC voting rights.
• Contact Congress: Ask friends and roommates to write their members of Congress about DC voting rights.

One Day

• Flyer: Post informational flyers around your campus. Use DC Vote's example or create your own!
• Partner Up: Speak at meetings of existing student groups such as NAACP, Amnesty International, ACLU, campus Democrats, Republicans and other political or advocacy organizations about DC voting rights. Explore their interest in organizing a DC voting rights awareness event.
• Table: Set up a table at an activity fair or campus center. Pass out information about DC voting rights, and ask students to sign the petition (PDF 20 kb). Give out candy to anyone who can answer one of the "10 Myths" (PDF 65 kb) questions correctly.

One Week

• Party: Throw a dinner party where your friends can sign petitions, call their members of Congress, write letters, enjoy food and listen to music.
• Debate: Collaborate with other political or advocacy organizations on campus to host or participate in a debate about voting rights.
• Create a student group: Rally around DC voting rights and make a coordinated effort at educating students at your school using ideas from this list.
