Pass this message along to family and friends in DC and around the country and ask them to put in a call for DC voting rights today. Thank you for doing your part to promote DC democracy.

More about DC Vote's State of the Union Campaign:

On the anniversary of President Obama's inauguration, we mailed 12 large boxes filled with over 40,000 petitions from DC residents to the White House. While we were at the National Capital Post Office, we teamed up with Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) for a press event to ask President Obama to make a strong statement in favor of DC democracy in his upcoming State of the Union Address. See the DC Vote Facebook Fan page for more photos and video!

Over the past two weeks we asked you to submit your suggested language for the president by e-mail or on the DC Vote Facebook Fan page, and then you voted on our top three choices. Over 1,000 of you casted your ballots. Now the votes are in. Below is the winning language that we have asked President Obama to include in the State of the Union:

"Our country fights for democracy and freedom around the globe, including in Iraq and Afghanistan. In the nation's capital, literally within feet of where we sit tonight, 600,000 of our fellow citizens who pay taxes and fight in wars are denied a most fundamental right of democracy. I call upon the Congress to enact long-stalled legislation immediately in order to grant to the citizens of DC full voting rights in the House of Representatives." - Jerry Levine, via e-mail
