DC Vote Communications Committee

Next Meeting:     TBD

About the Communications Committee

DC Vote's volunteer Communications Committee works to get DC Vote and the issue of DC voting rights into the media as often as possible. Communications Commmittee efforts will be conducted in a strategic, targeted manner that complements DC Vote's outreach and advocacy efforts.

Adopt a State

Our Adopt a State program targets the media in the states where specific members of Congress who are in positions to draft or co-sponsor legislation on DC congressional voting rights are from. The best way to influence members of Congress is by influencing those who live in his or her district.

We ask that every person who adopts a state(s) commits to writing letters to the newspapers in those states. We also ask that they attempt to make relationships with editors and reporters at the major papers.

Web Site Review

Interested Communications Committee members will be asked to review DC Vote's Web site for ease-of-use and accuracy as well as reviewing other Web sites to see if there are ways to improve or revise DC Vote's site.

Pool Media Contacts

Interested Communications Committee members will can share media contacts with whom they may have a personal or professional relationship. This will help DC Vote cultivate deeper relations with important media.

Washington Post Outreach

Currently, the Washington Post consistently publishes news related to DC voting rights in the Metro or B Section. This section is only published for circulation around the District and on their Web site. To reach out to more readers, we need to encourage DC's hometown paper to publish news related to DC voting rights in its National or A Section.

Volunteer Recruitment

To build a strong committee, we need to grow. As a committee, we'll investigate and implement methods to increase membership on the Communications Committee.

Take action. To RSVP or get more information on the Advocacy and Outreach Committee, contact Kevin Kiger by e-mail at kkiger@dcvote.org.
