DC Vote Advocacy and Outreach Committee
About the Advocacy and Outreach Committee
The DC Vote Advocacy and Outreach Committee works to promote DC Vote and the issue of DC voting rights in DC's communities and on Capitol Hill by targeting their efforts at community groups, coalition members, elected officials and members of Congress.
Adopt a Member of Congress
While Washingtonians are denied voting representatives in Congress, we can build relationships with members of Congress to better inform them of the issue and let them know that we demand action. Because Congress has exclusive legislative authority over the District, we need to work with members of Congress to pass voting rights legislation for DC. Members of the Advocacy and Outreach Committee will Adopt Members of Congress and build relationship with their offices by maintaining contact with key staff members, sending letters, notices, and making phone calls. Interested Advocacy and Outreach Committee members will work to get members of Congress to support and/or introduce DC voting rights legislation.
Coalition Partners
DC Vote has a coalition of more than thirty local and national organizations that help us get the word out about DC voting rights. Interested Advocacy and Outreach Committee members will work to broaden the scope and reach of our current coalition.
Champions of Democracy Awards Reception: Silent Auction
Each year, DC Vote holds a silent auction as part of the Champions of Democracy Awards Reception, our major annual fundraising event. Interested Advocacy and Outreach Committee members will help organize the silent auction by engaging local and national businesses and individuals to secure in-kind items or services for the auction.
Faith-Based Organizations
Interested Advocacy and Outreach Committee members will work to build awareness and energy for the DC voting rights movement among faith-based organizations. Places of worship and key religious leaders will be encouraged to support DC voting rights and wor with DC Vote to support legislation.
Community Events
Interested Advocacy and Outreach Committee members will attend festivals, conferences, and other community events with DC Vote to engage the numerous DC communities in the DC voting rights movement and current legislation.
Volunteer Recruitment
To build a strong committee, we need to grow. As a committee, we'll investigate and implement methods to increase membership on the Advocacy and Outreach Committee.
