DC Vote's 2002 Champions of Democracy Awards Reception was held on Tuesday, January 14, 2003, from 6:30 to 9:30 PM at the Hyatt Regency Capitol.

(The event was postponed from its original date of December 5, 2002, and location of the Decatur House and Museum due to inclimate weather.)

Each year, DC Vote recognizes Champions of Democracy for their dedication to fulfilling the promise of democracy for residents of Washington, DC. These men and women represent the very best of American excellence.

Champions of Democracy exercise their liberties to speak out about the injustice of living under a system where the governed do not have a vote in the election of those who govern. They understand that being disenfranchised affects all aspects of civic and community life.

DC Vote's 2002 Champions of Democracy are:

  • U.S. Senator Joseph Lieberman

  • U.S. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton

  • Frank H. Rich Sr.
The Awards Reception was a great success with over two hundred people attending to support the mission of DC Vote and to help honor DC Vote's Champions of Democracy.

DC Mayor Anthony Williams spoke and DC Vote was joined by Councilmembers Phil Mendelson and Jack Evans, U.S. (shadow) Senator Paul Strauss and U.S. (shadow) Representative Ray Browne were also present.

DC Vote is deeply grateful to all its friends, supporters and advocates for making the Second Annual Champions of Democracy Awards Reception a success.
