DC Women's Protest

Date:     Wednesday, May 4, 2011

Calendar
Location:     Upper Senate Park (200 New Jersey Ave NW)
Time:     5:30 PM

Congress will be back in the beginning of May to vote on a bill, H.R. 3, that would once again override local DC laws on women’s health care. DC Vote will be on the Hill as well, supporting a protest led by DC’s women to demand equality and full democracy in DC.

Sign up here to join the protest on Wednesday, May 4 at 5:30 pm in Upper Senate Park (200 New Jersey Ave NW).

This will be the first event of a strategic protest campaign to keep pressure on both our opponents and allies in Congress, with another protest planned on May 11, same time and place. We must make the cost of ignoring us higher than whatever political deal our rights can be traded for.

The following women will lead the protest on May 4:
  • Yvette M. Alexander, DC Councilmember
  • Muriel Bowser, DC Councilmember and #15 of the DC 41
  • Mary M. Cheh, DC Councilmember
  • Elizabeth Allen, esq Chair, DC Vote Board of Directors
  • Billie Day, Past President, DC League of Women Voters and #19 of the DC 41
  • Dr. E. Gail Anderson Holness, President, Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington
  • Maudine Cooper, President and CEO, Greater Washington Urban League
  • Terri Lee Freeman, President, Community Foundation for the National Capital Region
  • Corryn Freeman, #22 of the DC 41 and student activist, Howard University
  • Laura MacCleery, Director of Government Relations, Center for Reproductive Rights
  • Tiffany Reed, President, DC Abortion Fund
  • Karen J. See, National President, Coalition of Labor Union Women
  • Anise Jenkins, Stand Up for Democracy and #14 of the DC 41
  • Jewell Fenzi, Women’s National Democratic Club
  • Patrice Sulton, Vice President, DC NAACP
Currently 17 states also use local funds to cover abortion services, and 17 Representatives from those states (along with 77 other members) signed on to a letter telling DC Mayor Vincent Gray to stop doing the exact same thing. Should DC laws - and DC’s women – be held to a different standard? We must stand up on May 4 and tell Congress NO. American women have never tolerated being second-class citizens, and DC’s women will not allow it now. Sign up now to join the protest.

No matter your political party or position on abortion, you can agree that Americans in DC should be afforded the same democratic rights to a say in the laws that govern them as every other citizen. Stand up for DC’s rights, and women’s rights, on May 4 and bring your friends, family and colleagues.
