Tax Day Protest and Bonfire 2002

Date:     Monday, April 15, 2002
Location:     Farragut Square in Downtown DC
Time:     5:00 PM - 6:30 PM

On a busy downtown afternoon, DC Vote and other voting rights organizations put on a wildly successful tax day protest. Mayor Anthony Williams, Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, members of the city council and other voting rights organizations spoke about the injustice of paying the second-highest per capita federal income taxes in the nation, but having no vote in Congress on how that money is spent. Protesters burned copies of their 2002 federal tax returns.

DC Vote, the Committee for the Capital City, DC Democracy Fund, DC RABBLE, Let's Free DC, the Statehood Solidarity Committee and Stand Up! For Democracy in D.C. Coalition co-sponsored the protest, called "Taxes Paid - Representation Denied."
